HO Scale Trains Still the Most Popular Choice
HO scale trains are currently the most popular for several reasons. They are also known as H0 or H-zero. The name originated because the scale is about half (H) the size of models constructed using the zero-scale or gauge.
Double-0 (00) gauge models are built using a larger ratio, but the tracks are the same. 3.5mm of track represents one real foot.
In the early years of modeling, the scales became progressively lower. The introduction of the zero-gauge early in the 20th century followed the older 3, 2 and 1 scales.
There were attempts to design models half the size of zero-gauge as early as WWII. Manufacturers felt that the smaller size would be cheaper to manufacturer, which is one of the reasons it became popular during the depression.
Hobbyists wanted a smaller size to allow them to construct larger layouts in terms of miles of track in their homes. As the years went by, smaller scales, such as the N and Z were introduced.
Those turned out to be harder to handle and the number of details that could be included on a piece were limited. N and Z models are still available. There’s just not as much to choose from.
Tracks for HO scale trains manufactured today are primarily composed of nickel-silver. The original material used was brass. Nickel-silver became the preferred material, because it is more resistant to corrosion.
Some of the older Bachmann tracks were constructed of steel. So, if you bought a used vintage set of rails, you might get brass or steel.
The materials used to manufacture the locomotives and other pieces vary, as does the quality. Most are made of some combination of plastics and inexpensive alloys. Limited special-edition locomotives are typically constructed of brass.
Kits and individual pieces are available from dozens of manufacturers throughout the world. HO scale trains are available in practically every price range. There may be 30 different versions of a popular F7 locomotive ranging in price from a few dollars to several thousand dollars.
As is the case with other scales, you may find that the actual size of a piece is not exactly what you expected. Manufacturers have started marketing accessories and figures as H0/00 in order to appeal to more hobbyists. The actual scales used to manufacture the pieces ranges from 1:64 to 1:87.
eBay is the place to go for the largest selection. Currently, there are over 100,000 HO scale trains being auctioned off for reasonable prices and you can buy with confidence, because of eBay’s buyer protection plan. It covers your purchase price and the original shipping fees in case you are unhappy with your train.
